Scaling laws with current for equilibrium momentum spread and emittances from intrabeam scattering and electron cooling rates

چکیده
Emittance growth due to intrabeam scattering (IBS) is a major limitation for high energy high density accelerators. The reachable maximum particle density depends strongly on how IBS can be compensated for by electron cooling (EC). Hence calculations of the growth rates of the horizontal and vertical emittances ̇h,v/ h,v and of the (longitudinal) momentum spread ̇ / due to IBS are necessary for estimates of the final beam quality. For that purpose the standard theory of the IBS rates based on classical Coulomb scattering has been developed by Piwinski [1], Bjorken and Mtingawa [2], and Martini [3]. Lateron various approximations which make the theory applicable and solvable for practical purposes have been applied by Wei [4], Rao and Katayama [5], Piwinski [6], and Parzen [7]. All these IBS heating rates can be cast into the form

M ay 2 00 7 Theory of the friction force using electron cooling as an intrabeam scattering process
Using the results found previously [5] for the cooling rates of the emittances, due to collisions between the electrons and the ions, a result is found for the friction force acting on the ions. It is shown that the friction force found here when used to track the ion bunch will give the same emittance cooling rates as those found using the intrabeam scattering theory for electron cooling [5].F...
متن کاملStudy of Intrabeam Scattering in Low-energy Electron Rings
Practical use of Compton back-scattering for x-ray production has been suggested by several authors. Recently Z. Huang and R. Ruth [1] proposed a novel scheme that involves the interaction between a laser pulse trapped in an optical cavity and a fast recirculating electron bunch. The proposal is currently being considered for implementation. The size of the required storage ring is naturally sm...
متن کاملTheory of electron cooling using electron cooling as an intrabeam scattering process
Electron cooling that results when a bunch of electrons overlaps a bunch of ions , with both bunches moving at the same velocity, may be considered to be an intrabeam scattering process. The process is similar to the usual intrabeam scattering, where the ions scatter from each other and usually results in beam growth. An important difference is that in electron cooling the mass of the ion is di...
متن کاملIntrabeam Scattering Analysis of ATF Beam Measurements
At the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK intrabeam scattering (IBS) is a strong effect for an electron machine. It is an effect that couples all dimensions of the beam, and in April 2000, over a short period of time, all dimensions were measured as functions of current. In this report we derive a simple relation for the growth rates of emittances due to IBS. We apply the theories of Bjorke...
متن کاملIntrabeam scattering growth rates for a bi - gaussian distribution
This note finds results for the intrabeam scattering growth rates for a bi-gaussian distribution. The bi-gaussian distribution is interesting for studying the possibility of using electron cooling in RHIC. Experiments and computer studies indicate that in the presence of electron cooling, the beam distribution changes so that it developes a strong core and a long tail which is not described wel...
